Transportation

Air Traffic
Also the Austrian aviation enterprises commit themselves to a sustainable development of the air traffic and set activities for environmental and climate protection.

The needed Kerosene is pumped via a pipeline to the Vienna airport which otherwise would have to be delivered with fuelling vehicles. This contributes to a relief of the heavy traffic on the road.
Since 2008 the Vienna airport also operates natural gas vehicles and it is planned to replace the entire car fleet with these means of transport.

The nearby refinery Schwechat supplies the Vienna airport with district heating by the surplus of their process heat; therefore it does not need to be cooled down with additional energy, and thus brings a double positive environmental effect. The drinking water and the water for industrial purposes derive from four own groundwater wells.

Waste separation not only takes place on the ground but also already in the air. Austrian Airlines and the Vienna airport have developed a disposal logistics together, which has in the mean time validity for all airlines arriving at Vienna.

In addition Austrian Airlines, as the national carrier, works on the following measurements: reduction of kerosene consumption, CO2 emissions reduction, cleaning without chemicals, reduction of residual waste, noise prevention measures.
In addition, they offer the passengers to make their personal contribution to climate protection. When doing an on-line reservation, a CO2-computer determines the impact on the environment for the selected flight and the amount to neutralize it. This voluntary amount can be adapted and is donated to Climate Austria.

Public transportation
With more than 80% coverage of all mobility needs of the Viennese population, the Wiener Linien (Vienna Transport Authority) network ranks among one of the best developed in the world.

The Wiener Linien have committed themselves to act according the propositions supply security, environmental sustainability, economical and social responsibility and have been awarded in 2001 from the Klimabündnis Österreich (Climate Alliance Austria) for their achievements in the field of climate protection.

Measures - like for example the operation of the motorbus fleet with liquid gas, the partial energy recovery in the electric circuit as well as the use of solar energy for the water heating and support of the heating of some underground stations - contribute substantially to the climate protection.
Furthermore all car washing facilities have been changed to water reprocessing; vehicles running with diesel were partly substituted with battery operated vehicles and the complete underground network has been changed to energy-saving driving.

To guarantee a smooth arrival and departure at mega events such as concerts in the Vienna Praterstadium or the Danube Island Festival, the operation of vehicles and the amount of employees on duty is increased. More and more tickets also include the reference "valid as ticket in Vienna" and hence can be used on all public transportation 2 hours before and up to 6 hours after the start of the event in Vienna.

Cycling in Vienna
The bicycle has reached an important place in the metropolitan area and therefore contributes substantially to climate protection in Vienna. The goal of the city of Vienna is to increase the traffic share of bicycles to 8% of the entire traffic volume until 2015. Currently the bicycle traffic network covers more than 1,000 square kilometres.
Besides various bike rental outlets, the Citybikes have been introduced in 2003. At 60 bike stations bicycles can be rented and also returned. Within the first hour, the use is free of charge. The only condition is a one-time registration via cash card, Citybike-Card or credit card.

For a particularly environmental friendly transfer within Vienna, there is the so called FAXI available - the bicycle taxi.
