Ibis, the world's fastest growing economy hotel chain owned by the hotel company Accor, is leading the way in achieving ISO certification for quality and protecting the environment for individual hotels from Bureau Veritas. In Vienna, the following hotels have received ISO 9001 certification for quality and ISO 14001 certification for protecting the environment: ibis Wien Mariahilf, ibis Wien Messe and ibis Wien Schönbrunnerstrasse.

ISO 14001 certification for protecting the environment since 2004

Since 2004, every ibis hotel has been subject to ISO 140001 certification for protecting the environment. These ISO 14001 certificates, issued and supervised by Bureau Veritas, incorporate a code of conduct for managing the hotels in an environmentally sensitive way, in which the negative impact of every activity should be systematically minimized. The most important features of this certification are:

Sorting waste: A suitable location in the hotel is designated as the collection point and every employee is informed about this. Objects to be sorted and collected include ink and toner cartridges, batteries, spray cans, used cooking oil, a variety of packaging materials, glass, paper, cardboard and PET. An inspection of the companies that collect this waste is carried out to determine whether the sorted waste continues to remain separated. Every ibis hotel has developed a waste management concept and is committed to reducing the quantity of residual waste by 5 % in 2010.
Save water and energy: The hotels summarize the consumption of water and energy on a monthly basis. By using the system in place, it is possible to examine differences, calculate consumption and identify deviations.
Recognize and analyze environmental risks: The hotel draws up an environment and risk analysis in order to avoid potential dangers. These incorporate general environmental risks, chemical risks as well as occupational safety.
Separate wastewater network: The hotel has technical plans to ensure that wastewater networks are separated.
Raising guest awareness: Awareness of environmental issues among guests is raised by means of information placed in the rooms and includes advice, such as on refraining from changing towels unnecessarily, turning off lights and electrical appliances, and keeping water consumption to a minimum.
