Sustainability at the InterContinental Vienna

Sustainability is strongly anchored at the InterContinental Vienna. Responsibility towards society and the environment is integrated into all of the hotel’s departments, where the ecological impact of each individual process and working step is evaluated.

ECOPROFIT Award
To strengthen its commitment to sustainability, the InterContinental Vienna took part in the ECOPROFIT project, which assesses the sustainable activities of organisations. For participating in the project, establishing measures and achieving savings, the InterContinental Vienna was conferred with the ECOPROFIT award. The hotel’s measures are focused on waste and emission prevention, energy management, waste management and environmental controlling. It achieved the most savings in the areas of paper, water and energy consumption. Among other things, the hotel managed to reduce the amount of paper consumed by 30% through efficient print management and improved print settings. This corresponds to 515,000 sheets of paper a year. In addition, 1.6 million litres of water were saved by training and raising awareness among employees and guests. On top of that, 125,000 kwH of energy per year have been saved through structural measures in the maintenance department, which corresponds to the yearly consumption of seven multi-person households.

Responsibility
At the InterContinental Vienna, responsibility is not limited to just ecological matters. When it comes to human resources, we employ 300 people from 27 nations, with a personnel policy focused on equal opportunities and genuine diversity. The concept of social and ecological responsibility is also integrated into the food and beverage department. The quality and origin of all food and beverages are of great importance to the InterContinental Vienna, and seasonal and local products are central to the hotel’s culinary concept. Selected FAIRTRADE products, including coffee and orange juice, are used throughout the whole hotel and for events.
